Magnesium
Magnesium is the eighth most abundant mineral in the world and, as it dissolves in water, it is also the third most abundant mineral in seawater after sodium and chlorine. In the human body, it is the eleventh most common substance, which is mainly found in bones and teeth (60%), muscle tissues, cells and blood.
Magnesium is important for every cell of the human body. Of the soft tissues, magnesium has a significant presence in the heart and brain - the organs that generate the most energy activity. A substantial part of it is absorbed in dissociated form in the form of basic magnesium or Mg 2+ ion through the so-called metal ligand complex.
Magnesium oxide
Magnesium oxide is a powder of tiny colorless crystals. The natural reserves of MgO in the form of the mineral periclase are too negligible. For this reason, they obtain magnesium oxide mainly in an industrial way - by thermal decomposition of magnesite MgCO3 or dolomite CaCO3·MgCO3.
Depending on the intensity of thermal decomposition, either light calcined magnesium in the form of small crystals or heavy calcined magnesium in the form of large crystals is obtained.
Scope of magnesium oxide
In addition to its wide application in the metallurgical industry, in the rubber, cement, refractory and oil processing industries, magnesium oxide is used in the food industry and pharmaceuticals.
The food additive magnesium oxide prevents clumping and relieving loose foods. In addition, magnesium is a widespread emulsifier in the production of edible oils, margarine, chocolate and milk powder.
Magnesium is a vital element found in all tissues of the body and is essential for the proper functioning of cells. It is part of the metabolic reaction, regulates the transmission of nerve impulses and provides a spasmolytic and antiplatelet effect during muscle work. Magnesium oxide and magnesium salts are traditionally applied in cardiology, neurology and gastroenterology (magnesium aspartate, magnesium sulfate, magnesium citrate)
Due to its antacid effects, magnesium is used in products to treat heartburn and reduce acidity.
One of the basic functions of magnesium is the role of the "helper molecule" cofactor, which is involved in more than 600 biochemical reactions.
